The duo Garlands from Berlin and Hamburg is a dreampop-shoegaze project characterized by double vocals, guitar and synth layers. Already the name of the band — a reference to the first album of the Cocteau Twins — reminds of ethereal atmospheres of the 90s. With their sound, Garlands cite the noise of that era in My Bloody Valentine mode. At the same time, the two multi-instrumentalists create wide landscapes that range from delicate pop harmonies, loops and dream spheres to raw distortion effects, with echoes of ambient, kraut and psychedelic rock from different eras. Lyrically, too, the musicians embark on a journey into vast cosmos. Garlands stand for the deconstruction of confining concepts. Unwilling to let the narratives of pop be dictated solely by twenty-somethings or old men, they tell of highs and lows, transit zones, peaks and abysses from the standpoint of female midlife. Looking back, looking forward, exploring remote and reinventing.
