Le Birrette are “the new all female ska sensation” from Bologna, Italy. Since 2015, they explore all the Jamaican rhythms from the ’60s and the ’70s: from ska to rocksteady, reggae and roots.
The inspiration comes from vocal trios such as The Techniques, The Gaylads, The Pioneers and the instrumental session bands at Studio One and Treasure Isle, like The Skatalites or Sound Dimension, Soul Vendors… The beautiful combination between vocal harmonies and the groove of the instruments is what they want to get. They have toured across Italy, Germany, the UK and Jamaica, sharing the stage with many international artists, like Johnny Osbourne, The Skatalites, The Aggrolites, Ken Boothe, Dennis Alcapone, Keith and Tex just to mention a few.
They produce all their recordings indipendently. The album and the EP were recorded live and direct on reel in a full analogue studio, in the typical style of ’60s Jamaica.
In March 2017 they released their 1st 7″ single ”Mr.A”, including on the B side their interpretation of the jazz standard “Blue Skies”, performed on a version of ”Satta Massa Gana” by The Abyssinians. In May 2017 they started their tour in Jamaica, participating at the Ocho Rios Jazz Festival, thanks to the friendship with the Studio One singer Myrna Hague and the Skatalites.
In May 2018 their LP DEBUT album “Gals Songs Only” was released with the video “Jamaican Night”, an early reggae tribute to the flavours, the singers and the musicians from Jamaica. Few months later, a second official video was released for “Wounded man”, an original ska track against gender violence.
